Saratoga Hills – Overview

Louie Leu Architects had two goals for this building wonderfully perched on the hills of Saratoga: maximize the extraordinary views of the location and minimize the environmental impact of the new home.

The first, he accomplished through the roof decks, infinity pools and obviously, the vast glazed openings. The second he achieved through ventilated wall cladding, concealed solar panels, capturing water run off. Louie Lou knew he wanted a powder coated steel look for the windows and doors, yet wanted a light oak for the interiors.

Metal clad (be it bronze or aluminum) wood windows are very popular because they have a very low maintenance cost. Unfortunately, there are no options for steel.

CoorItalia therefore proposed the Metal-Wood collection of windows and doors from Brombal USA. These units flip the staus quo on its head by building a steel, corten steel, stainless steel or even a bronze unit which has narrow profiles and is strong enough to hold large dual pane glazing. However, the inside is clad in wood, allowing for a warmer aesthetics in the interior for those who do not care for metal. The additional advantage of the Metal -Wood windows is that the steel profile is thermally broken, thus allowing great energy efficiency.

In selecting CoorItalia’s Metal Wood windows and doors Louie Leu obtained both of his goals, maximizing the views by using narrow profile frames, but minimizing energy impacts by using a thermally broken frame.
